Justice for all, not just for some.
In 2014, an older gentleman came to the Upstate to rely on family support after being disabled by a stroke. But he soon found himself languishing without trial in Greenville County Detention Center, wrongly accused of robbery and completely failed by our local justice system. How did an innocent man lose two years of his life under the current Solicitor’s watch?
This man was arrested in July 2014 under suspicion of robbing a fast food restaurant where he’d been a customer. Unable to afford a $35,000 bond on his disability and social security income, he was locked up. Two days later, prosecutors found evidence pointing to his innocence: a weapon and glasses matching witness descriptions, and accounts of their owner trying to sell a similar gun on the night of the robbery. Yet for 711 days this helpless man waited. He finally regained his freedom after charges were dismissed due to lack of sufficient evidence – almost two years later.
The fiasco came at high cost. It left the man fearful of our legal system, and left taxpayers paying an $85,000 settlement plus thousands more for the man’s incarceration. How did the current Solicitor respond? He publicly denied any responsibility. He blamed the innocent man’s attorneys, minimized the evidence pointing to the real criminal, and saw no problem with the system he says is “the best in the world.”
That’s why Lucas Marchant is dedicated to fixing a system that delays justice in the Upstate. With 12 years of experience in the 13th Circuit Solicitor’s office – where he achieved some of the highest case resolution rates – he’ll eliminate the backlog that denied this innocent man fair representation, and ensure rich, poor and everyone in between receive fair and equal treatment in Greenville and Pickens counties. By championing true justice, Lucas Marchant will protect all taxpayers from the huge bills that come with delayed justice and the lawsuits that follow.
